P&O Maritime Logistics launches industry-first deployment of SmartCap fatigue management system
14 September 2021
- In an industry first, P&O Maritime Logistics deploys wearable technology to complement and boost safety protocols in Phase 1 of a planned full system implementation.
- The SmartCap solution from Hitachi group company Wenco International Mining Systems has helped companies significantly reduce fatigue-related incidents.
- P&O Maritime Logistics continues to use innovative solutions to boost the safety of its employees and customers.
Last month, P&O Maritime Logistics began Phase 1 of its implementation of wearable technology that proactively prevents microsleeps and supports workers in managing their fatigue — an industry first, and a boon for safety in maritime services.
SmartCap from Wenco International Mining Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery, has previously been used in the mining and trucking industries to eliminate safety incidents due to fatigue. P&O Maritime is testing the effectiveness of this technology to bring leading-edge safety to their operations and customers.
The wearable technology actively monitors real-time fatigue levels of employees, sensing when a worker has reduced ability to resist sleep. The system then activates an alert system, notifying the wearer to take action to prevent a safety incident. SmartCap works independently but has been designed to complement existing safety technologies and protocols common throughout heavy industry. Companies that have used SmartCap as part of their safety protocols have reported a significant decline in the number of fatigue-related incidents.
Embracing new and emerging technologies is part of the innovative mindset at P&O Maritime Logistics. Enacting practical digitalisation in its business is leading to disruptive change within the industry – both for customers and employees.
For example, the company has put digital first in its recent innovative offering, Supply on Demand, which has disrupted the status quo for moving cargo – reducing costs and boosting efficiency. Through using technologies such as SmartCap, P&O Maritime Logistics is on the leading edge of implementing the next generation of operational excellence for its employees.
After the conclusion of the initial 90-day phase, which began on 27th July with a group of employees at the Jebel Ali port in Dubai, P&O Maritime Logistics will assess the success of the system and how to integrate it across its entire network.
Martin Helweg, CEO of P&O Maritime Logistics, said: “I’m incredibly proud that P&O Maritime Logistics is leading our industry by piloting this innovative safety technology. We’re always looking for ways that we can boost the safety of our crews and empower them to ensure that safety is always front of mind.”
A key element of SmartCap technology is that it puts wearers in charge of managing their fatigue by sending them private early warning alerts. By keeping the alert private to wearers rather than triggering a central alert, SmartCap empowers workers to act on their fatigue pre-emptively with a proven scoring system that pinpoints propensity to resist sleep.
At P&O Maritime Logistics, SmartCap is intended to complement existing safety and fatigue management systems and protocols. Crew always have the right and responsibility to stop working if they ever feel too tired.
SmartCap also assists P&O Maritime Logistics in eliminating fatigue-related incidents through escalated intervention alarms that are customized to local fatigue management policies. The technology can be adapted to various vessel operating requirements, including crew work hours and rotations.
As a safety leader in the industry, P&O Maritime Logistics actively implements solutions that improve end-to-end safety in its own operations to ensure its customers benefit from services of the highest standard. Through the strategic engagement of SmartCap, P&O Maritime Logistics is continuing to make demonstrable gains in safety to cement its leadership position and validate this new approach to safety for the industry at large.
Helweg continued: “As P&O Maritime Logistics is a tech-driven business, the SmartCap system is an exciting way we can look to introduce innovative solutions that help in our efforts to continuously boost our high safety standards. With technology such as SmartCap, it also gives us a high-level view of our safety programme and will help us track fatigue across our crews.
“I look forward to seeing the results of the pilot and to working closely with Wenco International Mining Systems on understanding how this tech can become integrated into our safety systems.”
Klaus Hansson, Wenco’s Regional Manager — Europe, Middle East, and Kazakhstan agreed: “It’s exciting to see our proven technology being rolled out in new industries and countries – and P&O Maritime Logistics is our partner of choice to begin piloting the system outside of a mining and trucking environment.
“As we continue to gather information from the implementation, we will be able to harvest the analytics to see how our system can be integrated across P&O Maritime Logistics’ network. Our ambition is for the SmartCap system to be introduced across a wide variety of industries where safety is a top priority, and we’re excited about taking this step with P&O Maritime Logistics.”

About SmartCap Technologies
SmartCap was developed to overcome the limitations of other fatigue monitoring technologies. Most people are aware of the dangers of driver fatigue, but our ability to recognise the signs diminishes as we become more fatigued. We believe that ultimately each and every person is primarily responsible for managing their own fatigue so our technology is designed to ensure that individuals are empowered to make this possible. Through alerts, reports, and profiles, each user will know when they are at risk and the times of the day that their risk is greatest. SmartCap helps to develop techniques to effectively manage fatigue and alarms to ensure your workforce is safe.
